Will you soon be able to enter the city? Zero-emission zones are coming!

22 May 2024

🚚🌱 From 1 January 2025, the logistics sector in the Netherlands will undergo a major change. Over 30 of the largest municipalities will then introduce zero-emission zones. Only zero-emission trucks and vans will then be allowed to enter city centres and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The introduction of zero-emission zones in Dutch cities is a step we understand from Lease.car; fewer harmful emissions and air quality in our city centres will improve as a result. But this transition has hefty financial implications for small businesses and the self-employed. As a result, many business owners are faced with the choice of having to make large investments in new zero-emission vehicles, or be banned from city centres and surrounding neighbourhoods.

What does this mean for you?

The zero-emission zones are being set up mainly in city centres and surrounding neighbourhoods with the aim of reducing air pollution and encouraging more sustainable transport. If you, as a business owner, want to continue your business activities in these areas, you need to invest in electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Every municipality setting up such a zone will communicate the details and required steps for implementation at least four years in advance. Municipalities may designate an urban area from 1 January 2025 where no polluting vans and trucks are allowed to operate. But they may also opt for a later introduction, which gives you as a business owner some flexibility to adapt. You can find the zero emission zones for each city via the following link.

What now?

The advent of zero-emission zones often means more than just updating your business vehicles. It also involves a strategic rethink of your logistics processes. Take companies like Coolblue, for example, which are already setting a good example by implementing delivery by cargo bike. The introduction of these new zones is also an excellent opportunity to review your business vehicles and logistics processes to future-proof your operations.
